James and Sherry

Gary Fronrath Chevrolet in Fort Lauderdale has an annual rocking chair contest as an advertising gimmick.  I rode by the dealership in mid-November(1984) and saw this nice looking 1956 Chevy Nomad on display.  The sign read, “4th Annual Rock Around the Clock, This Classic 1956 Chevy Nomad can be yours.”  This could be fun.

The contest started at 8PM, Friday, December 7th.  The rules were pretty basic.  You have to be seated in the chair and keep the chair moving.  Each contestant gets a 5 minute break every hour.  Other than that, if the chair stops you're out.  83 hours and 7 minutes after it started, at 7:07AM, Tuesday, December 11th, I had won the 4th Annual Rock Around the Clock when my final competitor kind of dozed off into a coma.  I was declared winner and awarded the grand prize, the only prize I wanted, a 1956 Chevy Nomad. I’ve had the car ever since.  After taking the photos on the beach, I drove to a shop where we are about to begin a complete frame off restoration/modification.

Sherry and I stopped by the CNA 23rd Annual Meet in Dayton on our way to Flint to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Chevrolet.  I’ve had Nomads pretty much all my life but have never joined the Nomad Club.  Well, we enjoyed see the other Nomads at the meet and joined the CNA.
